Lily Lau may not be the first feminist artist in Hong Kong , but she is probably the most well-known one. Her first book Mom’s drawer is at the bottom – sex, gender, gender politics published in Chinese in 1998, caught widespread attention and received rare reviews from Chinese readers all over the globe. Within six months time, the book was also published in Taiwan , followed by a publicity tour in the city.
Lily’s career as a comic artist started with contributions to non-government organizations (NGO), including Hong Kong ’s Association for the Advancement of Feminism, which Lily became a chairperson.  Lily’s comics have appeared in the publications of Oxfam, Greenpeace, Amnesty International and numerous other Hong Kong NGOs.  Lily is also a contributor of newspapers, commercial and NGO magazines and internet web sites.  Topics of her work include issues in gender and sexuality, ecology and sustainable development, social justice and activism, art and culture.  Her work reflects an abiding concern to humanities.

Highly stylized and harsh graphics pervades in lily’s comics.  The black and white visuals are striking.  Twisted plots lead to surprising endings.   Lily’s comics is a world of contradictions, ironies, tiny figures and monstrous creatures.  Her underlying tone is somber but her drawings and the crash between language and visual are humorous.

Lily studied graphic design at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and worked briefly in the design field.  She then became a program executive for a territory-wide development and relief NGO in Hong Kong for five years.  At present, she spends her free time in perusing her interest in sport climbing, organic gardening, as well as cultural anthropology and cultural studies.  She is trying to live a life that she enjoys most and looking for ways to eliminate the boundaries between activists, artistic and commercial spheres.  Lily’s commitment to intellectual and activists activities, and her harsh and sassy graphic style, makes her work stands out from the comic world.
